British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a several approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
