The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
