Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
