In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
